Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an incoherent, broadband, intense light technology. Its design principle is based on the theory of selective photothermal action. By emitting pulsed light energy within a specific wavelength range, IPL precisely targets the target tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding normal structures.

From an optical design perspective, pulsed light systems typically use a xenon lamp or flash lamp as a light source, with filters used to adjust the output spectral range (typically 500-1200nm) to suit different treatment needs. For example, the 570-950nm wavelength can target hemoglobin for vascular lesions, while the 640-1200nm wavelength targets melanin in hair follicles for hair removal. Key design factors include pulse width, energy density, and cooling system. Short pulses (milliseconds) focus energy on superficial target tissues, while long pulses (several milliseconds to seconds) penetrate deeper and are suitable for dermal treatment. Dynamic cooling devices protect the epidermis through pre-cooling, synchronous cooling, or post-cooling techniques to prevent thermal damage.

In terms of engineering implementation, pulsed light devices require the integration of high-precision power modules to control flash frequency and intensity, and evenly distribute energy through optical lenses to ensure consistent dose across the treatment area. Modern systems also incorporate real-time feedback mechanisms, such as skin impedance monitoring or infrared imaging, to dynamically adjust parameters to optimize efficacy and safety.

Pulsed light technology is widely used in medical aesthetics and dermatology due to its non-invasive nature, diverse indications (such as skin rejuvenation, redness reduction, and acne treatment), and low risk of side effects. Its design focuses on balancing targeted energy output, penetration depth, and tissue protection. Future advancements in spectral control and intelligent algorithms will further enhance the precision and personalization of pulsed light technology.
